Blue Ringed Octopus Reproduction
-The Blue Ringed Octopus is one of the only octopuses lethal to humans. Its
venom is very poisonous to the human body.
-Its reproduction process is very
similar to other types of octopuses.
-It starts by touching the female with
his hectocotylus, which is one of the arms of the octopus modified to transfer
sperm.
-The male then grabs the female, covering her eyes and repeatedly
putting his hectocotylus into the females mantle cavity, depositing his sperm
packets.
-The intercourse ends when the female wants to stop and she has to
forcefully remove the male because he is too excited that he wont't
stop.
-The females lay one batch of 50 eggs in their lifetime.
-They hold the eggs under one of their arms for six months, until the eggs
hatch.
-When the eggs finally hatch, the mother dies and in about one
year, her offspring will reproduce.
