Caenorhabditis Elegans
The caenorhabditis elegans, or c elegans, is a transparent roundworm about 1 mm in length that lives in temperate soil enviorments.
C. elegans have two naturally occurring sexes, a male and a self-fertilizing hermaphrodite. Females do not naturally occur, and males are a rarity, making up only about 20% of the population. The hermaphrodites reproduce by producing sperm first, and then eggs. After they're produced., it will simply fertilize its own eggs. Males that do exist do reproduce with hermaphrodites, which mixes up the gene pool. Eggs are laid withing 2 to 3 hours of fertilization and hatch approximately 12 hours later.
